Day 10 | Bible Reading/Memorization 2
Joshua 1:8 (NLT)Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
OBSERVATION
Have you ever been in the middle of reading and realize you don’t remember what the last few paragraphs said? We’ve all been there and when there is no intentionality or purpose to why we are reading then it is easy to get distracted and not remember what we read. Sometimes we view Bible reading as an item on our spiritual checklist. We read in order to say we did it and move on with our day. Then when we are faced with a difficult situation or being attacked by the enemy we aren’t ready to fight because we don’t have the spiritual arsenal to fight back.God’s Word is the weapon we use to combat the trials of life. We cannot just read the Word, we have to study it. We have to take our time with it. One definition of study is devoting time and attention to learning a subject, often through reading, research, or practice. Our daily reading should not be about the amount of scripture we read, but rather how much we understand and what we can remember. There is a quote that says, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. ” The idea behind this is that with any large or overwhelming task it is better to take our time and consistently work at it. It is ok if we end up “chewing” on the same portion of scripture for more than one day.
APPLICATION
Most of us have a favorite song and we know every word of it. Why? It is because we have listened to it over and over again and those lyrics are forever stuck in our heads. A practical way we can memorize scripture is by putting it on repeat in our lives. Start with one portion of scripture, it doesn’t even have to be a full chapter, then read it, write it, read it outloud, and continue this cycle until it is ingrained on your heart and in your mind. Then move to the next portion of scripture and start the process over again.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank you for the Word that is my weapon to fight with. Help me to meditate on it, and apply it to my life. Let the Word lead me and equip me to do the work You have called me to. I want to create a habit of devoting time and attention to the Word by studying it and obeying it. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
