Day 11 | The Bread of Life

Romans 13:14 (ESV)
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

John 6:51 (ESV)
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

OBSERVATION

What you eat determines your health. Try and find a doctor who tells you to eat McDonald’s nuggets and a Dr.Pepper every day for a balanced diet… You can’t. What we feed our bodies matters, but not as much as what we feed our souls. Our spirit needs a healthy diet just like our physical bodies do.

In the Romans passage, Paul talks about the flesh and its “cravings.” He is saying that if we satisfy our unhealthy cravings, then we cannot be healthy. Instead, he tells us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” In John, Jesus even compares himself to the bread from Heaven that God gave the Israelites. He says that He is the “bread of life” and that if we consume Him, then we will gain life.

God’s Word, his son Jesus, is nourishment for our Spirits. If we feed our spirits with the Word of God, surely we will be made strong and healthy! Don’t deprive your self of good spiritual food or you sacrifice a strong spirit. One day, our bodies will pass away, but our spirits remain forever! Feed your spirit and keep it strong with the Word of God!

APPLICATION

Examine what you feed your own spirit. Are you feeding yourself junk? Think of the part of you that is your flesh and what it craves. Do you give in to those cravings? Absolutely no one is perfect, but if you continue to read the Bible each day and feed your Spirit a healthy diet, those cravings will diminish and you’ll watch yourself grow.

PRAYER

Dear God, I know that your Word is good for me. Forgive me for the times that I have chosen to feed my spirit things that were not good. I want to grow strong and healthy in you. Thank you for giving me your son Jesus, who is the bread of life. Amen.
