Day 20 | Excellent Choices

Philippians 4:8 (NIV)
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

OBSERVATION

All humans enjoy to be entertained. If you think about it, this starts at a very young age and continues until the end of our time here on earth. Whether it’s wonderful music, a good movie or show, or the latest Tik-Tok trend, we enjoy watching and listening to things that entertain us. Entertainment in itself isn’t bad or evil. After all, God is the one who made the “arts” and gives humans the wonderful gifts and creativity that humans possess. The problem comes in when the content of our entertainment choices goes in direct conflict with what we read in scripture. In our scripture today, Paul makes it pretty clear what we should allow and what we shouldn’t allow. When we choose our entertainment choices, whether it’s the music we listen to, the show we binge watch on Netflix or the Reels we watch on social, we should ask: Is it pure? Is it right? Is it admirable? Is it excellent? These questions help us make sure that we are consuming the RIGHT thing.

APPLICATION

Take a look back at the last 5 songs you’ve listened to, the last 5 shows or movies you’ve watched & the last 5 stories you’ve watched on social. How do they line up with our verse from Philippians 4:8? Are there some entertainment choices that you need to re evaluate in order to make excellent choices?

PRAYER

God I know that you want the best for my life. You are not here to hinder me or restrict me, but rather to give me life and life more abundantly. Help me learn to make excellent choices with the things that play such a huge role in my life. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
