Day 7 | The Lord’s Prayer: Part 3
Matthew 6:12-13 (ESV)
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
OBSERVATION
Asking for forgiveness is essential in prayer. Proverbs 15:29 says, “The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.” Asking for forgiveness is the first step in aligning ourselves with God, in submitting ourselves to Him and his will. Asking for forgiveness and turning away from sin brings us closer and closer to God as we begin to let go of ourselves and cling tightly to God.
Our time of asking for forgiveness in prayer is also a time to be thankful to Jesus Christ and in his grace. When we pray for forgiveness, we must remember that we are already forgiven because Jesus paid the price for our sins. The reason that we can even ask for forgiveness, having confidence that it will be done, is because of Jesus!
The final line of the Lord’s prayer asks God not to lead us into temptation, but to guard us from evil. Does God ever lead us into temptation? Well, James 1:13 says that “God tempts no one.” What Jesus is saying here is that even in the trials and troubles that we might have in life, we must have faith that God will bring us through! 2 Thessalonians 3:3 says, “the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”
Prayer is all about faith. When we declare the Lord’s prayer, we are committing to believe in God’s grace, provision, and protection. We call out to God and rely on Him because there is no one better to lean on than God. I like to think of God as a reclining chair, we can put our full weight on Him, resting on Him, having confidence that we will not fall. Lean on the Lord! He will not let you down!
APPLICATION
When you pray, ask for forgiveness knowing that you are already forgiven by God’s amazing grace. Also, when you pray, believe in God and tell Him you trust Him because no one is more fit to carry your weight than He is.
PRAYER
Dear God, I know that you have already forgiven me. I know that your gift of grace, Jesus Christ, has covered all of my wrongs with his blood. I ask that you forgive me for the wrongs I have done, help me to be more like you. Lord, I trust you and I believe that when I pray to you, you hear me and that your hands are covering me. Lord, please guard me from harm and evil. Thank you for your protection. Amen.
